Recommended Settings For Your Thermostat

When it comes to your thermostat, one temperature does not suit your home year-round. There are specific things you should keep in mind in order to maximize your comfort and your energy savings. Well, we, at HARP, are here to help you figure out the recommended settings for your thermostat to do just that.

The Recommended Temperature

Setting the right daily temperature is the first step to having your programmable thermostat and HVAC system working at their peaks. The right temperature also prevents you from wasting energy and hiking up your utility bill.

In the Summer

According to the Department of Energy, while you’re home, you should keep your thermostat at 78℉ or warmer. However, we realize that seems a bit warm for summer and almost redundant.

To balance your energy savings and comfort, try keeping the temperature between 70℉ and 75℉. When no one is home, to save energy, it’s best to keep the thermostat no cooler than 85℉.

In the Winter

The Department of Energy suggests keeping the temperature around 68℉ or cooler when you’re home, which is good since most people like their home to feel about that temperature. At night, you should turn the thermostat down to around 60℉, a little warmer if you’re too chilly.

Tips for Setting Your Thermostat

Adjust It When You’re Not Home

For every degree you turn your thermostat up in the summer, you save about 1% on your utility bill. While that may not seem like a lot, if you turn your thermostat up 10-15 degrees for at least eight hours every day (while everyone is out of the house) you could save up to 15% on your cooling bill.

Turn on the “Hold” Function When You’re Away

If you’re going on vacation, turn on the “hold” function on your thermostat to set a lasting, energy-saving temperature. It’s best to set the temperature at no warmer than 90℉ in summer and no cooler than 55℉ in the winter.

Don’t Mess with the Thermostat Too Much

Although you may want your home to be warmer or cooler on some days, don’t continuously crank the thermostat up or down. Just because you want your home cooler right away, it doesn’t mean your system works any faster. Once you set the new temperature, just let your system work as usual to get to that temperature.
