Avoiding a Holiday Plumbing Disaster
The holidays are a time for family, friends, food, and fantastic memories. But nothing can ruin the good times as quickly as a pesky plumbing issue can. Unfortunately, between all the cooking and extra bathroom trips, the holiday season can be notoriously prone to these mishaps.
To prevent your gathering from being interrupted by any problems, make sure you follow these tips for avoiding a holiday plumbing disaster.
Flush Your Drains
This is especially important to do in your shower if you have guests who will be staying a while. First off, clear any hair or soap scum from around the top of the drain so no one gets what looks like a small rodent caught on their foot during a shower.
Next, use a mixture of baking soda and white vinegar to flush your drains of any gunk that may be stuck deep down in the pipes. Lastly, invest in cheap hair traps to prevent any major future clogs from forming.
Watch Your Disposal
If you have a habit of tossing unsafe items down your disposal — grease, stringy vegetables, etc. — now’s the time to break that habit. All those foods could harm or clog your disposal on a normal day, but with all the extra cooking you’ll be doing during the holiday season, you’ll end up with an even bigger plumbing issue.
Remind Your Guests of Toilet Etiquette
Whether they are caused by more people at your home or a few more holiday cocktails than usual, there’s likely going to be an increase in flushes during the holiday season. That’s why it’s a good idea to remind your guests that the only thing that should go down your toilet is waste and toilet paper — that’s it!
Diapers, sanitary pads, q-tips, medications, and wipes should all be tossed into a trash can to avoid a messy clog!
