Getting Your Home Ready for Vacation

Summer is finally here, and you know what that means — it’s time for summer vacations! We’re sure you’re busy packing and getting all your outfits in order, but before you jet off, make sure your home is just as ready for your getaway as you are.

Your Home’s Security

Take Care of Your Mail

This is especially important if you’re going on an extended trip — a pile-up of mail is basically a green light for home intruders. Either arrange for someone to grab your mail each day or head down to your local post office and ask them to not deliver your mail until you’re back.

Set Up Light Timers

It would be pretty obvious to tell that no one’s home if your house is totally dark for a week. Buy and install a few light timers and place them in different rooms around your home. This will cause lights to turn on for set times throughout the day and make it seem as if someone is home.

Keep a Car in the Driveway

A lack of cars near your home is a pretty good sign that no one is there. Park at least one car in your driveway or arrange for one of your neighbors to park there so the house looks lived in.

Your Home Systems

Turn Off Your Water Main

The last thing you need to come home to is a flood in your basement. Before you head out on your trip, shut off your main water valve to prevent finding any problems upon your return.

Set Your Thermostat

Your thermostat will have a “hold” setting that you should turn on before you leave for vacation. Setting it will ensure you have a constant, energy-saving temperature while you’re gone.

Flush Your Garbage Disposal

Take a few minutes to flush your disposal to get rid of any food scraps that may be sticking to the inside of it. If you don’t flush it, don’t be surprised if you come home to the smell of slightly rotting food.

Check Your Smoke Detectors

Most detectors last a good number of years but make sure to test yours before you leave for your trip to ensure that they’re all working properly. It’s probably best to change the batteries just in case.

Check Your Sump Pump

If there’s a big rainstorm while you’re away, you’ll want to have peace of mind knowing your sump pump is in good shape to keep water out of and away from your home.
