How to Get the Most Out of Your AC
Temperatures keep rising as summer rolls on, meaning your AC is becoming a more and more important part of your family’s home comfort. Since your unit will be working hard to keep you cool this summer, and it’s not exactly free to make that happen, wouldn’t you want to get as much out of your AC as possible? Yeah, that’s what we thought.
There are a few things you can do throughout the summer (and rest of the year) to get the most out of your AC.
Keep the Filters Clean
This is one of the easiest and most important maintenance tasks you can do for your AC. A dirty filter limits your unit’s airflow and makes it harder for it to do its job — not to mention it hikes up your utility bills. You should replace or clean your filter each month for top efficiency.
Keep the Area Clear
Don’t place furniture, drapes, or decorations near your indoor AC unit — all those objects can block its airflow. You should also check the area around your outdoor condenser unit and make sure it’s free of leaves, branches, and other debris.
Close Your Shades
When the sun’s out and shining on your home, keep your blinds and shades closed to block out those rays. All that sunlight floods your home with extra heat that counteracts your AC’s efforts to keep your home cool.
Seal Up Air Gaps
Cracks and air gaps can allow conditioned air to seep out of your home — which wastes a lot of energy and money. Use caulk to seal up any potential air gaps around your windows and doors to prevent cool air from escaping your home.
Don’t Set Your Thermostat Too Low
We understand that some people like their homes to be ice cold in the summer to beat the heat outside, but you should not be setting your thermostat to a super low temperature like 55℉. After a certain point, your AC won’t make the air any colder, so all you’re doing by setting that low of a temperature is putting more strain on your system and costing yourself more money in energy bills.
