Signs It’s Time To Get Your Water Heater Serviced
Most people don’t know that their water heater has failed until they step into the shower and are surprised with nothing but cold water — no matter how far they turn the nob. Instead of waiting for a cold shower or flooded basement to be the clue that your water heater has failed, know when it’s time for a repair by keeping an eye out for these signs.
1. Sudden changes in temperature.
Is your shower a constant battle between finding the right balance between warm but not too hot? If you notice your water’s temperature changes throughout your shower, but you’re not the one changing it, it’s likely a sign that mineral deposits have built up in your heater. If this is happening, it’s only a matter of time before your hot water is gone altogether.
2. Low/no pressure.
In addition to messing with your water temperature, mineral deposits can also mess with your water pressure. The more minerals pile up, the less space water has to flow through your pipes.
3. You’re noticing rusty water.
If you’re seeing rusty water coming out of your pipes, this is a clear sign that your water heater is going to fail any day now. And while rusty water is certainly not something anyone wants to shower in, it can also be hazardous to your health if swallowed.
4. Rumbling noises.
As with many appliances, the older your water heater gets, the more noise it will make — this is usually thanks to a build-up of sediment. As the sediment sitting in your tank is heated and reheated, it will begin to harden and hit the side of the walls.
5. Small leaks.
That sediment we just mentioned? It can do a lot more than cause your heater to make noise. As hardened sediment scrapes against the side of your tank it will leave small holes in the tank. Slowly, water will start to leak and you’ll notice small puddles forming around your heater.
